Thousands of residents of Kilifi North and Ganze sub-counties are expected to have their burden of food insecurity eased following the deployment of food aid to cushion them from the effects of the coronavirus.
Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi on Monday flagged off a consignment of relief food and also launched the “Simama na Kilifi Emergency Relief & Households Support” program.
According to Governor Kingi, the first phase of the program will see an estimated 50,000 vulnerable households receive the relief. The beneficiaries of the relief were identified by county officials.
“The distribution of this relief food will be conducted with the help of modern technology to ensure the food reaches all the identified families, while at the same time adhering to both National and the County Government directives,” Governor Kingi said in a tweet.
Kilifi has recruited hundreds of volunteers who have been packaging food received from donations at the Kilifi Cereal Board warehouse in Kilifi town. There are similar efforts being undertaken in Mtwapa and Malindi.
The food hampers are expected to be delivered to the doorsteps of the beneficiaries according to an earlier statement by the county’s Devolution Chief Officer Adan Mohammed.
Governor Kingi is expected to flag off another consignment of food hampers in Mtwapa on Wednesday. This consignment will target Kilifi South, Rabai and Kaloleni. The consignment in Malindi will serve Malindi and Margarini sub-counties.
The food aid is also a welcome relief given the warning issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department that Kilifi will be one of the counties hardest hit by the onset of the long rains.
