UDA presidential candidate William Ruto on Saturday assured President Uhuru Kenyatta that the country will be in safe hands when he retires on August 9.
While exuding confidence that he will win Tuesday’s polls, Ruto said he will take the country forward from where Uhuru will have left off.
“I want to tell my brother Uhuru, my good brother we worked together, we achieved a lot together, but as fate would have it you chose a different path and I wish you well as you retire,” Ruto said.
“I’m very confident that this country will move forward. I’m very confident that you know my capacity, I do not want you to fear, you have nothing to fear,” Ruto said.
The two former political soulmates have been on bad terms since the March 9, 2018 handshake between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga who’s now Ruto’s rival in the presidential contest.
Uhuru endorsed Raila as his preferred successor much to Ruto’s disappointment who considered the move an act of betrayal.
In recent days, the two have taken to attacking each other publicly with the head of State telling voters not to elect someone who can’t be trusted with the county’s leadership.
Uhuru termed Ruto a liar and urged the electorate to be careful not to elect a leader who does not have the country’s best interest at heart.
The President said Kenyans should not bungle their future at the last minute by voting in a thug.
“Restrain yourselves from electing a thief. I don’t want to hear you crying and regretting. There are people who have funny stories but they are as sweet as honey and so convincing, but they are poison,” Uhuru said.
He spoke when launching a dam in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, on August 1, 2022.
But the DP said he has what it takes to steer the country forward once Uhuru leaves office on August 9.
“I will respect the foundation you built. I will respect the things we did together and I will build on that foundation and my friend it is going to be phenomenal,” Ruto said.
