At least seven people have died following an outbreak of cholera in Illeret ward in Marsabit County.
According to Marsabit County Executive in Charge of Health Jamma Wolde, who confirmed the news on Thursday, another 134 people have been hospitalised.
The cholera outbreak further complicates the county and national government’s response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which has affected 384 people countrywide and killed 15.
Marsabit, however, is one of 34 counties yet to register a positive COVID-19 case.
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease that can kill within hours if left untreated.
According to the World Health Organisation, a cholera outbreak has been reported in three counties since the start of the year namely: Garissa, Wajir and Turkana.
